in the suburbs of California and rapidly
descends into a pitch black comedy
posing as the autobiography of an
emotionally damaged narrator with a
singular gaze. Told in the language of
advertisements, doctor's reports, emails,
phone conversations, journal entries,
family letters, interviews, and recordings,
The Bologna Generation reveals the
savagery of the modern family in
defiance of the political rhetoric
surrounding "family values".

DIFFICULTIES OF THE TEXT

Written on the constraint model of the
French Ulipo movement, The Bologna
Generation is wrought with pitfalls and
difficulties. The treatment of voice,
structure, and form are only a few of the
these. True to the violence of the story,
the language that carries the narrative is
continually in flux and the main characters
are as nameless as the suburbs in which
they live.
